For Autistic Boys, the Subway Is Actually Soothing
Travis Huggett thought of the subway as a means of getting from one place to another. Then he had a son on the autism spectrum.
To Orson, now 9, a train was something more than transportation. It was soothing, endlessly fascinating, more intriguing than any destination it might reach. At his school for children with autism, other boys shared the same passion. When Mr. Huggett started photographing some of them, asking them about their interest in trains, he discovered how many different ways they were drawn.

At the New York Transit Museum, the staff noticed that their most enthusiastic visitors were boys on the spectrum, a phenomenon seen at similar museums around the globe. So in 2010 it created a Subway Sleuths program for autistic children in second to fifth grades that uses their common interest to help them develop social skills. This summer it added a pilot program for high school students. “Our purpose is all about communication and building friendships,” said Regina Asborno, the museum’s deputy director.

Alleen is dat een andersoortig programma als dat in het artikel bedoeld wordt.

Ik vind Rail Away niet echt een programma waarbij mensen met een afwijking in het autistisch spectrum in contact komen met elkaar. Wat ik me wel voor kan stellen is dat we in Nederland andere manieren hebben waarop deze mensen hun communicatieve vaardigheden kunnen verbeteren, maar dat weet ik dus niet.

Ze met elkaar in contact brengen via een of ander medium, waarbij ze dan meteen hun spelling kunnen verbeteren, bedoel je? Tja...

Dat valt te betwijfelen ja.
Maar nu even serieus. Volgens mij hebben veel Nederlandse railmusea (in de breedste zin van het woord) wel een soort kinderprogramma, ongeacht de mate van autisme. Dat is een begin.
Voorts lijkt het mij dat in Nederland de mogelijke kennismaking met railvervoer wat laagdrempeliger is dan in New York. In onze grote steden kom je zowat op elke straathoek trams tegen, daarvoor hoef je niet naar een museum.

In New York heb je natuurlijk veel treinen en metro's al zijn de afstanden daarmee wat groter en op veel plekken is het wat minder prominent aanwezig in het straatbeeld (behalve de ingang).
Maar juist dát, het feit dat er zo'n ingangetje is naar een groot systeem dat je naar allerlei andere bestemmingen kan brengen intrigeert me bijzonder. En het mooiste vind ik dan de Noord-Zuidlijn, hoe daarmee afstanden worden overbrugd in enkele minuten waar je vroeger met een beetje mazzel een halfuur over deed.
Het leukste is eigenlijk wel het ongebreideld kunnen verkennen én het verdwalen (ik wel althans) in zo'n systeem. Jammer dat dat laatste juist erg moeilijk is met autisme omdat (ik spreek voor mezelf) je de kaart uit je hoofd kent.
