Many people use iTunes to manage their media libraries in Windows—not just music, but videos and podcasts, too. Apple announced today that iTunes will be broken into multiple applications in macOS, but the company didn't specify onstage what will happen to the same program in Windows.

The answer, it turns out, is not much. Apple says users of iTunes under Microsoft Windows will not see any changes. It won't be broken up into several apps; it will work just like it does now. However, Apple did not provide any clarification about what support will be like for future features. The company simply says that Windows users will continue to have the same experience as before and that it is not announcing any plans to end support for iTunes in Windows.

But keep in mind: that only means for now. Apple might one day bring an Apple Music application to Windows just as it has to Android. But just as the iTunes era seems to be ending for the Mac, it will continue for the immediately foreseeable future in Windows—so iTunes is not really dead. At least not yet.

Veel mensen gebruiken iTunes om hun mediabibliotheken in Windows te beheren, niet alleen muziek, maar ook video's en podcasts. Apple heeft vandaag aangekondigd dat iTunes zal worden ingebroken in meerdere applicaties in macOS, maar het bedrijf heeft niet op het podium aangegeven wat er met hetzelfde programma in Windows zal gebeuren.

Het antwoord, zo blijkt, is niet veel. Apple zegt dat gebruikers van iTunes onder Microsoft Windows geen wijzigingen zullen zien. Het zal niet worden opgedeeld in verschillende apps; het zal werken zoals het nu is. Apple heeft echter geen verduidelijking gegeven over hoe ondersteuning voor toekomstige functies zal zijn. Het bedrijf zegt eenvoudigweg dat Windows-gebruikers dezelfde ervaring zullen blijven hebben als voorheen en dat het geen plannen aankondigt om de ondersteuning voor iTunes in Windows te beëindigen.

Maar onthoud: dat betekent alleen voor nu. Apple zou op een dag een Apple Music-toepassing naar Windows kunnen brengen, net als voor Android. Maar net zoals het iTunes-tijdperk voor de Mac lijkt te eindigen, zal het in de nabije toekomst in Windows worden voortgezet, dus iTunes is niet echt dood. Tenminste nog niet.
